Default Air conditioner problem

The clutch on the AC compressor on my 2001 Ranger kicks on
them immediately kicks off again. If I'm stopped and in drive,
the tach drops a couple hundred RPM when the AC clutch engages,
then immediately goes back to normal when the clutch disengages
about second later. Any idea what causes this?
Thanks,
Henry

Low refrigerant level is the first thing that comes to mind.

Hank!? Is that you?

I'm guessing that you have the defroster on. Many fords cycle the AC
compressor quickly while defrosting for the drying effect on the air.
This helps to de-fog the windshield quicker.
