I've had two Cadillacs from the 60's, and the #1 was always on the
left [drivers'] side of the engine. I remember this because it's the
opposite side from Fords I've owned and the Ford I still have is on
the right. If you're in doubt, look at the front of your engine and
notice that one bank of cylinders is slightly ahead of the other.
The valve cover or spark plug that's closer to the front of the car
is the side where the #1 cylinder is...
