Default 164 oil consumption question

Hello folks,

I guess this has been asked here before, but here goes....

I approximate the oil consumption of my 2.0 TS 164 to be about 1 litre
for every 900 miles.

The car has done 94000 so far, and is otherwise in good condition. It
doesnt appear to blow smoke of any sort, and runs well. I'm probably
worrying over nothing - but could do with some input on the matter.

It's used for trips to work at around 70mph daily (round trip of about
25 miles max) and apart from the occasional holiday - not much else.

Anyone think this is normal, excessive etc ??

Thanks

Marcus

It does vary betwen individual engines and IIRC one litre per 1000 miles is
deemed within tolerance. However, I had a 2.0TS 164 that had been well
looked after. It generally burned from max to min on the dipstick between
oil changes (12k miles) and perhaps needed about a litre adding to ensure it
didn't dip below min before the next service. I owned it for 3 years,
89k-121k miles. It was serviced properly and was driven hard only a few
times, in Germany.

Perfectly normal IIRC Alfa say anything up to a litre per 1000km is
acceptable, so you're well within the allowance. My 164 TSpark uses about
half a litre per thousand miles and whatever it's doing with it, it's not
coming out of the exhaust as clouds of blue smoke, so I'm not worried. It's
been the same since I bought the car 30,000 miles ago. I think the time to
worry is if the consumption changes dramatically.

I read just a few weeks ago that the reason modern engines [and this
is not just Alfa Romeo] use a lot of oil is because, lots of car
manufacturer's are now filling new cars with fully synthetic oil on
the production line. This oil is not allowing the componants to run in
properly and consequently excess oil is used. So maybe we should drain
this oil early and replace it, just till the engines get run in, then
fill with fully synthetic. I don't think we shall ever know the answer
till someone try's this to find out. John,UK.
