Perplexing Engine trouble: '96 Jeep Cherokee
Greetings:
I have encountered a perplexing series of problems with my jeep. Briefly.... After having the head gasket replaced, I noticed a lack of warm air coming out of the heater. It wasn't as fridged as the outside air so "some" heating was taking place, but it was barely lukewarm. Certainly not as hot as it had been prior to the repair. I changed the thermostat. No change. Then the power steering pump seized. Had that replaced. After that repair, the engine now idles at an incredbily high rate. I don't have a tach, so I don't know exactly what its reving at. But, as an example, I can put the thing in 3rd gear and cruise across the parking lot at 25 mph without touching the accelerator! But, lo and behold, I also got back hot air....for a while. Then, just yesterday, the heater started blowing lukewarm air again! Out of disgust, I shut off the heater and turned off the fan. But my feet started to freeze, so I turned it back on figuring lukewarm was better than nothing....and guess what, I got back hot air. It seems to come and go intermittenly. Any ideas of how to...... A) get back good solid HOT air from the heater and B) dial the idle back down to something reasonable ......are highly appreciated. Thnx!! |

The high idle very likely means you knocked off a vacuum line somewhere,
have a close look around. Jeep Cherokees are real buggers to get the air out of the coolant system. Yours sounds like it has air. I would look really close at the heater hoses. There is one right beside the head that can get up too high to fill up with coolant. If you look you might notice it runs up above the level of the coolant in the radiator, this will partially air lock it and only give 'warm' heat inside. I have to tie mine down and I had to add more coolant to above the 'full' mark to keep good flow in mine. But I have that stupid closed system where the overflow is the fluid level. I think you have a real rad and overflow bottle.
