Default Problem with 1987 Mazda B2000 fuel control system

The mileage in my truck recently dropped from an average of about 25
mpg to 18 mpg. I have changed the fuel filter and plugs and reset the
timing. That did not do any good. I have confirmed that there is
current going through the electrical lines that go to the sensors and
the carbuerator. The truck is 1987 and has 160,000 miles. To my
knowledge, none of the fuel control sensors have ever been replaced.
I don't know how to check them. If one of them is faulty, namely the
sensor that tells the exhaust mixture, could that cause the excessive
fuel consumption? Is there any simple way to check all this out?
What is the most likely sensor to fail and cause the excess fuel
consumption? ANy thoughts will be appreciated.

I'm sure someone is going to suggest the 'oxygen sensor'
