Default Fan belt making weird revving up/down sounds.

My car recently started whining- it seems to be the fan belt up front.
You can hear the pitch get higher and lower based on how much gas you
give it. Is this a sign of a dying belt...or worse?

2002 FE V8 XLT

Thanks!

Probably. Ever replaced the belt? Buy one. Take the old one off.
Start the engine (don't run it very long) to check if noise gone. Hope
so... Install new belt. Check for the noise again. Still gone? Happy
day. Otherwise...

Its not the belt- I think it may be the alternator- thats the direction
i'm heading in...the sound is definitely coming from the alternator (or
extremely near it).

For future googlers this one turned out to be a failing power steering.
Needed replacement. All fixed.
