Fox engine/tranny removal

Default Fox engine/tranny removal

I have a sock 1990 gt with auto transmission. I have an oil leak that is messing my garage floor up. I have replaced the valve cover gaskets but this did not help. I have crawled over/under and everywhere with the engine running, put dye in and still can not pinpoint the source of the leak. My best guess is the intake manifold. Whereever it is coming from, it is in the back of the engine and somehow dripping on the exhaust because I can smell it burning. I think it is on the passanger side back of the engine.

Anyway, I have toyed with the idea of just pulling the engine and tranny and replacing every gasket in the engine. (This was after reading how hard it is to replace the oil pan gasket with the engine in the car).

I guess my question is, would you replace the intake and see if that fixed it or pull the engine? Also, how hard is it to pull and can I pull the engine and auto transmission out as one assembly? I have the space to do it. I will have to rent an engine puller. I have done a lot of mechanical work including replacing heads,etc but have never pulled an entire engine that I remember.

I appreciate any direction.

If you have put dye in, get the engine steam-cleaned so the whole engine
compartment is oil free. I suspect that once this is done and you drive it
for a couple of days, a UV light will make it very clear where the leak is.

The problem with finding oil leaks is there's just so much oil everywhere.

Take it to a car wash. Clean off all the oil and crud. Then use a good
UV light in a dark area to look for the leak. Don't forget things like
oil pressure sending units or galley plugs.

I would go over it real good and find the leak first. It could be
something real easy.
