well, improving economy is not idiotic, but cafe, the method currently
used as the means to try and achieve it, is complete b.s. and it's
riddled with deliberate loopholes like "flex fuel" which means
manufacturers can completely ignore it! utterly retarded.

we should just tax based on engine size, like they do in every other
developed country of the world, get rid of ethanol and its ridiculous
taxpayer funded oiligopoly loopholes, and tax gasoline more. fuel
economy would improve overnight, dependence on foreign oil would reduce
overnight, and it would free manufacturers to simply make what sold. if
some dude with an f350 and no cattle wants to ride down to san
francisco's castro district and have a good time showing off, let him.
if he can afford the gas. in the mean time, /reduce/ the tax on diesel,
and encourage its use because it is more efficient.

federal "government" should be big picture, not fine grained. emissions
laws, yes. but *how* a vehicle meets those emissions numbers should not
be part of the equation. and if they want to reduce gasoline
consumption, simply raise the costs of consuming it and leave the rest
alone. job done.
