I don't remember seeihng it in the law, but when I learned to drive (in
California, a long time ago) we were taught and I still practice a rule
that you basically can not do anything that crosses a line marker line
until you have "been stable in the new lane". (If that was defined, I
don't know where, but everybody knew what it meant. I wish it was
enforced here, where the norm for a freeway entrance is to drive across
the point and all the lanes until you hear the rumble strip, and for
exit, check the rumble strip, then cut across all the lanes and across
the point. Entrance is done at 10 or more under the prevailing speed.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen people blasting up the
middle lane. Near a big military base, usually jarheads with out of

That was the one thing I missed on my first driving test, when I
turned 16. Somehow I thought it was ok to go over the dashed line,
but not the solid line. Not wrong enough to fail, though I didn't
like not knowing something correctly.
