Default engine stuck to tranny! ugh!

56 hard top oval, if you don't remember (you probably don't)

Removed everything, and pulled the body off the pan. Feeling awesome.
To keep myself busy during the week, I was going to start tearing the
engine down. But no! I'm praying some PB Blaster and some time will
help... If not, I've heard that you can try getting at the bolts on the
pressure plate through the starter hole. Fun.

I'm glad I rescued this one before it sat another 10 years in someone's
yard...

wish me luck!

Brian (ugh!!!)

Hey Brian
I did mine two weeks ago and the car has been sitting since 91. John's site
was very useful: http://www.geocities.com/bugfuel/pull_it.html

Four bolt and it came right off for me with some whiggling -- you do have to
relieve the stress by jacking the engine up _very_ slightly. Grab it by the
fan housing, heat exchanger and whiggle it side to side.
I did find that the studs on the bottom of the engine were a little rough
since rocks must have dinged the threads, but all in all it was surprisingly
easy.

Taking the muffler off did seem to buy me more space but you have the body
off so you have all the space in the world

thanks for the info -- I'm pretty sure it's rusted stuck though. I've
got all the bolts out, jacked up lightly, and it comes out about a cm,
will wiggle all around, but will not come loose.

Weird! Mine was a snap - almost thought I did something wrong, because
it was so easy.

I'm a total VW newbie, so I could be way off base here, but maybe put
the car in gear and rock it back and fort all the while pulling and
twisting on the engine. It would obviously take two people, but maybe
it will break the rust, if that is the problem.
I'd be tempted to use a prybar, but not unless some of the guys here
say that it is ok.

Too bad you're not in CT - I'd come over and give you a hand (if
anything for moral support

You have to swear and curse loud and profanely, otherwise there's no
hope in hell! )

After that, get VERY angry and grab the muttha by the exhaust exiting
two and four, then wiggle and shake till you see little bright stars
even if it is daylight out....

Presto! And loose it was.

....that would be my first choice. It sounds like the input shaft has rusted
to the center of the clutch disc. Pull starter and try and get the blaster
in to that area. You may also try pressing on the clutch to break it free.

LOL - That's funny!!

The swearing/cursing/anger part is where the Bentley manual is clearly
lacking..

yeah, I hit it with WD-40 and worked the clutch for a while-- no go.
I'm hoping the PB Blaster will work better, especially if I give it a
day or longer..

thanks for the encouragement !
