For my MkI VWs, I just used an impact wrench to remove the nut and then the pulley fell off. You can also jam a screwdriver in the fan, but that is easiest when the alternator is mounted in the car. Out of the car, you might use a huge clamp clamped to the body such that the clamp will keep the fan from spinning. You could also get a big U-bolt to go in a mounting ear and interfere with the fan. |

any tricks to take pulley off alternator?
I hit it with an impact wrench, leave the nut on just the top of the thread
then hold the pulley in my hand and strike the nut inside with a hammer. Works like a charm and the nut catches the alt before it hits the floor (or the bench). Of course a vice and a socket extension might be easier for the striking part if you're not as gifted in the hammer eye co-ordination department. cheers, dru "dukecola" > wrote in message ... > Hello, All! > > Hi, they sent me an alternator with the wrong pulley, so I have to swap > the old one.
