cavalier problem
I have a 1999 Cavalier 4 cyl. with 108, 304 miles. The other night on my
way home from work, it started making a rattling noise and it was coming from right side of car. I drove a few more miles and as soon as i turned corner, it died and hasnt started up since. The temperature was fine, it tried to start,I checked for fuel and for spark and it had both. The lights still worked just fine also. I have had suggestions that it is the timing chain/gear and was told to put finger over hole where spark plug is and see if there is still pressure, if not it is timing chain. I dont have any idea what would be the problem since it is trying to start up. Any ideas or advice much appreciated! Thanks! |

Unless you are mechanically capable here, you really need someone to look at
this in person, long list of possibilities. "Ryan2708" > wrote in message lkaboutautos.com... >I have a 1999 Cavalier 4 cyl. with 108, 304 miles. I would do a compression test first. Then post back

Was driving one day on a busy expressway and it just shut off. No clunk, thud or noise. Then it would spin and would not start. It also sounded funny when i tried to start it. Well, 8 new valves latter, head decked and a new gasket set its working. The rattle you heard was the tensioner failing. On mine, the plastic came off the tensioner and got between the gears and the cam chain. It did not break, but the chain jumped time. I thought the 2.2 was not an interference motor, but IT IS! If yours is like mine, i will bet you have a slipped timing chain, bad tensioner, and maybe bent valves. A compression test will give you a hint before you have to take the head off. I spent a lot of time on mine putting a new timing chain on it only to find out the head had to come off and get redone. I did a compression test today, and the first three tested 120 and the last
one was 135. I'm not sure on if those readings are normal for my car or not. Any one know? Thanks! |
