Default fully sinthetic oil, how frequently change?

Honda Accord VP, 2002. I use fully sinthetic oil, Mobil 1, 5W-20. How
frequently it should be changed, each 5000 miles or may be somewhat
longer period?

Escape tube is black inside (car has around 50.000 miles, but it was
already slightly black when i bought it used and car had 18,000 miles),
does it means that car burning oil? may be it depend on gas used. I use
87 (manual says 86 or higher).

thanks,

kara

I would increase the oil change intervals to every 10,000miles (or
more) to compensate for the extreme price of the Mobel-1, Or go back to
the regulars stuff (unless the car spends it's weekends at the
racetrack).

a serious response would be to feel free to go by the maximum allowed
time in the owners manual.

Unless you drive under what the user manual describes as severe conditions
it makes absolutely no sense to change any type of recommended grade motor
oil any less than 5000 miles. I personally do not see the advantage of
synthetic oil [maybe if I lived in the Artic Circle] but for those that use
it, change at what the manufacturer recommends. I use 5000 miles because it
is convenient for the family in that oil changes are done at 20, 25, 30
thousand miles etc. The mentality in that if the recommendation is 7000
miles that 3000 must be better and maybe even weekly oil changes would make
your engine last forever does not make sense. Years ago poorly designed
engines would allow gasoline and other contaminants to enter the oil in
relatively damaging quantities but that is not the case anymore particularly
for well engineered engines like Hondas. If you car is burning oil you would
see that the quantity of oil in the engine is going down between changes via
what the dipstick shows.

5000 miles is a good interval for natural oil. Synthetic should be good
for at least 7500 to 10,000 miles. Mobil 1 now has an extended
performance oil good for 15,000 miles.

If the exhaust is a little sooty don't worry about it. If the car burns
more than 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles under normal driving
conditions, you should have a mechanic check it out.

thanks. I also was thinking in soemthing like each 7kmiles.
Apparently there is no any noticable consuming of oil, so sooty exhaust
pipe is probably because of frequent starting/stopping of engine
(because driving in the city).

and/or the brand/type of gas. dont worry about it. on my 1998 civic, it

My 98 Civic had a sooty exhaust since it was brand new. After
284,000km, the exhaust is still equaly sooty. So, I'm not worrying
about it.

You might need to check out the web site www.performanceoiltechnology.com to
gain the basic knowledge about the oil, then you can go back from there.
