Default Richard Burns Rally on Vista?

Just got a new PC with Vista, just trying out a few of my old sims to
see how they go.

Only one I've had any trouble with so far is Richard Burns Rally. Anyone
managed to get it working on Vista?

It installs, detects my video card (ATI 4850) but when I try to run it
is says something along the lines of "No Direct3D card detected" and
shuts down.

Don't have that game so can't say for sure but it may be because you
haven't installed Direrctx9 yet. Vista comes with Directx10 and is missing
a couple of files some Directx9 games need. Download dxwebsetup.exe from
Microsoft ands run that while online, it will install the files you may
need. You need to do this on Vista anyway even if that isn't what is
causing the issue with RBR as there are most definately games you will
probably come across that do need those files.

For older games I also recommend that you install them under any directory
except Program Files. This is because program files uses file virtualization
which is supposed to be transparent, but isn't and ends up screwing up older
games.

Thanks Maat, I'll try it.

Like you Andrew, I'd assumed that DX10 would be backwards compatible,
can't understand why MS wouldn't make it that way.

I'll give it a try tonight and see what happens.

I was wary of going Vista on my new machine, but I thought I'd bite the
bullet, as I've still got my XP disc, so could either revert to that or
maybe dual boot. I have to say though, that as yet, I've had no issues
with Vista (not quite a week in, so early days yet :-) ) It even seems
a bit quicker than XP, but that could just be down to it being a faster
machine, without years of crap on it, of course!!

Useful tip, thanks.

Were you using older Nvidia video cards? I think Nvidia Vista drivers
with older Nvidia card may have been the issue and not Vista. Recently
tested out Nvidia 7950GX2 and it performed great in XP but was dismal on
Vista64 on the same PC. Swapped card for 8800GT and the performance on
both OS was comparable. That wasn't my PC though so should probably set
up dual boot on my PC that has Vista64 and ATI 4870 and see if there is a
difference or not. That requires a lot of work though but I guess I
should do it to find out for sure.

Yea, I don't install any games under default location either. The Program
Files (X86) is a protected folder too and I have read that can cause some
issues for older games that need admin access level.
