Default Insurance question - rental car

I had rented a car and had listed a friend as an additional driver. When he
was parking - he happened to slightly scratche against another car that was
near by. There was a minor scratch on the rented car in the front bumper. On
the other car also there was a very minor scratch - no dents. The driver of
the other car estimated her damage to be a non-trivial amount and has
already reported it to her insurance company. Should my friend/I notify the
rental agency? If not notified they are probably not going to notice
anything. Should my friend notify his insurance company? Will I be affected
in anyway because I was the main 'renter' and my friend was only the
additional driver? Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Of course, you will be affected...depending on whather you bought the
optional insurance from the rental or agreed to pay from your pocket.
Did you (and your friend) buy liability from the rental or used the
insuarnce you guys have on the cars you own. If it is the second case,
then your or your friend's insurance comapnay will be footing the bill
on the other person's car...but still that perosn's insurance compnay
might contact your rectal agency...

In any case, when you exchnaged in with that perosn, did you give the
info of your car insurance company (assuimign you have a car and you
have liability; the same goes for your friend) or did you just give
the rental compnay info, i.e you bought liability form your rental
comapny. In the later case, that guy's insurance would contact
rental's insurance (get ph num via rental, may be) and get them foot
the bill.

In any case, when you return the car to the rental and they didn't
notice anything, and later they get contacted from the that guy's
insurance, they can't really come to you and accuse you of that
scratch if they didn't notice that it happened during when you rented.

Thanks Amanda.
We did not buy liability from the rental co. We met with our insurer today
and she advised it is best to file a claim and give anybody who asks the
claim number.
The rental co did not notice damages. so lets see.. We also did not exchange
rental co information with the other driver.
Thanks so much again for taking the time to help out.
