Default Cost of installing an alternator

Hi! My son has a 1997 Ford 4x2 Supercab. He had problem with
alternator. He took it to a Ford dealer who charged $430.00 for
installing a new alternator. Cost of Alternator was $200 dollars. Rest
was labor cost plus tax. Does the charge seems excessive to you? With
thanks in advance.

I've changed my Alternator on both my Isuzu Bighorn (trooper stateside) and
my Nissan Sedan. A simple matter, 2 hours tops on those. have a look under
the bonnet? how much manuvering room?

Depends... Dealers are always expensive places to have service
done..... How buried is the alternator on the motor??
Typically all that's involved is 2 bolts and one wire or one plug. With
easy access to the alternator it's a 15min job. Unless you need to swap the
pulley from the old to the new unit.

Lemme suggest that there was most likely a charge for the troubleshooting
and testing that took place in order to identify the alternator as the
problem. Then a coupla hours to replace it, then some more checking to make
sure all was well.
