Japanese quality...bwahahahaha...TOYOTA stands for "throw out your old
trash again."

Notice that even the Japanese beer-cans-on-wheels have not improved
efficiency in 30 years just like the American-made monsters? They were
getting 50 mpg in the 1970s.

Toyota and other Japanese brands are reasons American cars have gotten a lot
better.

They -were- flimsy "beer cans" back then, now they are bigger, heavier, better
quality and more luxurious, with more standard equipment.
So,just keeping the same MPG is an accomplishment.

Although it used to be that the Japanese autos were "beta-tested" or wrung
out in Japan before being sold in the US,so there would not be quality
issues.
