98 civic check engine light

After turning the car on/off several times yesterday while replacing the
blower fan, the check engine light suddenly came on.. I have unscrewed the
gas cap several times and tightened it but it is still there..

Any other ideas on how to remove it? I know that it might be an actual
error but this has happened in other cards and there seem to be ways to make
it disappear.

The quickest way to reset it is to disconnect the battery for about 30
seconds and reconnect (that is if you don't have a reader). If the
light comes back on, get a readout on what the problem is.

And then you get crappy gas mileage for the next week while the ECU recalibrates
itself. Why not just cut to the chase and go to a car parts store offering
free ECU readouts like autozone?

Don't do that.

The MIL will illuminate for any of literally 200 different problems. They
range from simple stuff like a loose gas cap to cat-melting rich mixtures.

Get the code read. (If you're in the US, AutoZone will read it for free and
turn it off for you.) Find out what the problem is first, then FIX IT. *How
much* did you spend to purchase your car....?

Meantime, tighten your gas cap some more and wait a few days. Insufficient
tank seal is the #1 reason for MILs these days.

Actually, they'll only turn it off if you buy the parts to fix it. :-)

You can clear it by unplugging the fuse that powers the "computer
module". Do it with the vehicle off and leave it unplugged for 10
seconds. But get a reading to find out what the problem is - only
takes a couple of minutes at autozone.

Yes but tightening the cap will take a few days for the ECU to clear
out the code. I have seen posts that even when this was the issue that
the light didn't do off for a few days.
The best thing is to get the code, but the original poster just wanted
to clear out the error and see if it comes back again.

....which was his mistake. How would he know whether any new recurrence was
a repeat of the old one, or a brand-new problem unrelated to the first,
unless he'd had the first code read before being cleared?
