Default Extended Warranty

Hello Everyone!

My manufacturer warranty is about to run out next year on my 2001
3.0i Z3 Roadster and I was wondering about an extended after market
warranty. Does anyone have any suggestions on who to go with? Any help
would be appreciated!

Thanks! -Tom

If you decide to go with a warranty make sure it has 2 things minimum 1)
right of transfer to subsequent owner (if you sell) 2) rebate on unused
portion of warranty (if you sell and decide not to pass on the remaining
warranty time/miles).

I have never had one on a Bimmer....I don't keep these cars more than 3 or 4
years....but I have had them on Jeep Grand Cherokees. In the case of my last
one with a Jeep I paid about $ 1,600.00 for it. I used it to repair/replace
rear wiper motor and driver's power seat. The repairs cost a total of $
1,625.00.. and I contributed 2 $ 50.00 deductibles. So the cost to me was $
1,700.00 for which I had $ 1,625.00 of work done. When I sold the car I was
given a refund on unused portion of warranty of $ 1,100.00. In the end the $
1625.00 in repairs actually cost me $ 600.00 out of pocket.

If I didn't have a warranty with a refund clause it would not have been
worth it. Extended warranties are always a crap shoot, unless you have a car
with an established record of defects (Grand Cherokees fit that bill :^)

In general, they're a waste of money. They have to make a profit and cover
the admin costs. So if you're *very* unlucky with breakdowns, they may be
worth it. If average, you'll loose. If lucky, you'll lose badly.

Some aftermarket warranties only pay out 10% of their overall premiums in
repairs. Go figure the odds on those being worth it for you.
