I know my history just fine, thanks. The threat to Israel has grown
through the years as their adversaries were armed, most significantly,
in a historical sense by the Soviets. The fact that Israel was able
to survive was due to the fact that the U.S. armed them proportionately.
The 1973 Yom Kippur War is an excellent case in point. (Arms from the
U.S. were negligible in the 1967 war.)

Back in the Sixties, when Israel got most of its arms from France (before
France instituted an arms embargo), the surrounding Arab nations weren't
as heavily armed as they'd later be.

The problem with you leftists (well, one of them, anyway) is that you
just don't understand the art of war. All of the things you enumerated
(except for civilian areas) are militarily useful. Destroying them
denies their use to H[e,i]zb[a,o]llah. It has the collateral effect
of putting pressure on the governments of Lebanon and Iran, demon-
strating that allowing Hezbollah to operate from Lebanon has conse-
quences.

As for the civilian areas, why do you think they're being shelled? Has
it occurred to you that it's being done because there are Hezbollah com-
mand posts and missile stockpiles in those areas?

Or would you prefer to think that Israel is doing the shelling willy-
nilly, just out of savagery -- and in the process wasting ammunition
that could be used to far greater effect against military targets --
and without providing _rhetorical_ ammunition to people like you?

Lebanon harbored terrorist organizations. All Lebanon has to do is
throw them out.

What I don't understand is with Israel's superior military capability,
why are these terrorist strongholds still operational? They should
have been put out of operation days ago, especially since the
Coalition has not asked Israel to exercise any kind of restraint.

Since they've harbored terrorist organizations for decades despite
being on the receiving end of a lot of unpleasantness from Israel,
getting them to toss the terrorists out will evidently require a
bit of persuasion. Which brings us to the events of the present
day.

Because while Israel's military capability is undoubledly super-
ior, it isn't infinite. Southern Lebanon is a big place, and
there's a lot to look for. Israel knows where some of these
places are, but probably not all of them. They're probably
highly mobile, too.
