Default lower timing gear removal

hi,

seeing that jy motors for a 95 are ~$900, (with kinda hi miles), here in
CT, i decided to have my motor reworked. i was hoping to get it to the
shop this afternoon, but I forget how to extracted the lower timing
gear. the manual does not elaberate beyond "disassemble in order
shown"...any hints?

thanks,
peter

Haven't pulled one BUT I'd assume that you undo the bolt, draw off the
pulley, then give the key a gentle tap with say the handle of a
screwdriver if you don't have a soft hammer
an it'll pop right out if it hasn't already fallen out.

Default lower timing gear removal

A good Impact tool (Pneumatic) makes short work of removing the nut.
(In gear, brakes locked)

Once, I had a real problem with a Chevy S10/LUV
It was solved (no impact tools) with an 8 foot pipe, breaker bar, and a HD
socket. (170 pounds(me) at the end of the 8 foot pipe provided lots of foot
pounds! In the dark ages, we used to disconnect the tranny linkage, and lock
the tranny up by engaging two gears at a time. This can also be done with a
Miata tranny, but I have never attempted it. (Take out shifter, then move
two shift rods manually.)

Locking the flywheel may be easy, or it may not. It just depends on what
you need to do to get to it. On some cars, usually automatics, the flywheel
(if it can even be called that) is easily cracked or warped. With a good
impact wrench, the "shock" is a very rapid spike, and mostly absorbed by the
mass of steel. There usually are better methods that involve tools specific
to the engine.

One area that I have trouble with are the bolts that hold the 5sp tranny
together. Seems that they like to stretch when tightened to book torque
value.

Another aggrivation is a "butter smooth" shifting tranny vs. a "stiff" or
"crunchy" one. It's tolerance that should determine things like this, and
short of tearing down a "smooth" tranny to compare against a not so smooth
tranny, I really don't know what the key tolerances might be.

Flex plate, actually but it can be locked the same as a flywheel.
There is a risk of cracking because they're so thin.

The easy way to remove the nut is with an impact wrench before the
engine is disassembled, there's usually enough compression and drag to
allow it to come loose.
