Default Ford Expedition Overdrive Light

The overdrive light on my gear shift is flashing. I have looked in the
owner's manual and have not found anything regarding this. Does anyone
have an idea as to what the problem may be?

A flashing overdrive light indicates a transmission problem.
In my Expedition's owner guide, this is covered:

"Transmission control indicator light (TCIL)

"The TCIL (OFF), located on the end of the gearshift lever,
may flash steadily if a malfunction has been detected. If
the TCIL is flashing, contact your Ford dealer as soon as
possible. If this condition persists, damage to the
transmission could occur.

"For more information, refer to the Driving chapter."

You should consider joing the Expedition Owner's Mailing
List. See

I'm having the same problem with my "97" F150 I can drive for several miles
then the light starts flashing and it feels and sounds like im running over
a rumble strip for about 1/2 a second and then shifts hard. I can shut it
off and start again and it's ok for a few miles.

The flashing OD light on Fords indicates fault codes detected in the
electronically controlled transmission. Unfortunately, by the time you
get tx fault codes, you probably already have noted physical shift
problems. Most likely will require a re-build, which should be around
$1600.00 +/- for a 97 150.
