BMW series 1 ?

I was searching the internet for a certain type of a car, and in one
of the picture galleries, I saw this new BMW series 1 which is
supposed to hit the market in late 2004.
There is not much info about the performance, engine size, etc.
I am a little confused. Did the original naming of the series depend
on the size of engine, size and luxury?
I recall series 3, then series 5 and series 7. The series 7 is usually
much more expensive and a larger car than the series 3.
Does this still hold true?
How does Series 1 fall into the category for the new BMW?
I also thought that the next two numbers of the series number tells us
about the engine size. BMW 318 - series 3 1.8 l BMW 325 - series 3,
2.5 l
However, in north america, the engine is usually larger in size.
Did they still make the series 3 with 1.8 l engine in Europe? I do not
see BMW 318 in the line up of their new products in North America.

www.thecarconnection.com had a blurb on it just a coupla days ago,
speculating whether or not BMW would ship it stateside with one of
their superb 4 bangers or go for a 6.

It seems this will not be the same engine used in the E46, it won't get
Valvetronic. What a shame.

Autocar (UK) had an article on it this week - including a drive of a pre
production example. They said it handled better than any car in its class
and was a delight to drive. Obviously, being RWD, it's tight for rear
interior space, but this won't matter to those who want this sort of car.

The bad news is that it's not destined for the US - they said - but the 2
Series variants will be.

It appears to be in direct competition to the Mini. Hope BMW have done
their market research well - IMHO they have, and it's a bold move bringing
back a small RWD car to a market saturated with competent but boring
lookalikes in this sector. I also rather liked the look from the pics -
unusual, but not offensive to my taste like the Bangle crap.
