Default 2000 GMC Safari Starting Problem

Well guys, the problem seems to be solved! I took the van to the local GMC
dealer in Medina, Ohio. After paying 80 bucks for the diagnosis, the
problem turned out to be the new Bosch spark plug wires, and cap and rotor.
I purchased the lifetime Bosch wires at the local Auto Zone, along with the
cap and rotor. From what I understand, the dealer said they have been
seeing a lot of problems with aftermarket wires.

After going to Murray’s Auto Parts and dropping a $130.00 bucks for a new
set of AC Delco wires, and the Delco cap and rotor, the van is running like
new. It set out in the rain the other night, and started right up in the
morning! We will see how this holds up.

One thing I did notice when replacing these parts for the second time, and
looking for problems will doing it, was the terminal on the cap were all
black on the connections with the exception of one. The metal tab on the
rotor was in bad shape also. These parts did have more than 1,000 miles on
them! My dealer said the boots were not to spec, and the wires were not
making contact, as they should. I was also getting some arcing where the
boot goes onto the plug. Two and a half hours replacing the wires, cap and
rotor, and some little odds and ends, and all is well! I’d like to talk to
the engineer that designed this van, because servicing it was not in his or
her mind at all. I’ve worked at service stations, and on my own cars for
the past 25 years, and have never seen anything like this. I thank God for
my patience to get this job done.

All said, the guys at Auto Zone gave me a full refund no questions asked!
Great customer service, it really surprised me. Not used to this kind of
service these days. And the dealership, Norris Auto Mall on route 18 in
Medina was super. Most times when someone comes in for service, and has
worked on the car himself or herself, they won’t touch it. I explained the
testing I did, along with results, parts replaced and current problems.
Not only did they tell me the problem, they checked out the rest of the
vehicle, and noted problems found. No high-pressure sales to fix it, just
a written list of thinks found that needed repaired. I even received a
call the next day from the service department asking if I was happy with
the service, and if I had any questions! If I run into a problem in the
future that I cannot solve, I will definitely go back to this dealer.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

Regards,

Ken
