An interesting thing I saw this AM
I was actually able this morning to watch a woman put on her make-up. It was really interesting and something that I had never seen before. The fact that I was observing this in my rear-view mirror while she was tailgating me at 60MPH made me a bit uncomfortable, but my fascination with the phenomena over rode that for a while. Damn, now I'm wishing I had brake checked her.... |

An interesting thing I saw this AM
OK, here is my interesting sighting this AM. I am preparing to turn left
from Six Fork Road, Raleigh NC onto the ramp for I-540 west. At this point Six Forks is on an overpass. There are a total of four lanes heading north, two straight and two that turn left into an on ramp to I-540 (plus two lanes heading south and a merge lane for traffic coming up from I--540). The left turn lanes have green turn arrows, the straight lanes are stopped. Out of the right corner of my eye I see a motorcycle streaking up on the far right in the breakdown lane (shoulder). He runs the red light for the straight lanes, and turns left across the two straight lanes (in front of stopped traffic), and zooms up the right shoulder of the left turn lanes and I-540 ramp. There is a third lane that merges with the on ramp about 50 yards down the ramp (for cars coming from the north), he forces one vehicle off the road, roars onto I-540 and is out of sight before I even merge onto I-540. Just one more reason for me to dislike motorcycles. Ed "necromancer" > wrote in message th.net... > > I was actually able this morning to watch a woman put on her make-up. Guy behind me in a RangeRover yesterday was eating takeout: fork in left hand and right hand holding cardboard tray - had to stop to take a corner. Glad to see him go. FloydR |

An interesting thing I saw this AM
I've seen these examples of people doing things that would seem highly
incompatible with driving... * Two cellphone wielders who stood out amid the many Cellular ADD victims we alls see every day because they were headed straight for me on the wrong side of the road until honked at. * Multiple instances of newspaper reading (such a commonplace that I only remember the exceptional ones -- like the guy who was coming down a mountain road and had the Wall Street Journal spread across the steering wheel -- I knew this level of detail because I was stopped at a red light, headed uphill, on a section that was down to one lane due to a washout, and he was tail-end Charlie coming downhill). * One instance of strongly suspected laptop computer use at 70+ on the freeway -- it was night and the interior of the car was brightly bathed in that eerie blue glow from something down in the seat that was dividing the driver's attention. * One map-reading, at night, which explained why the driver's speed had been varying between 55 and 70 for no apparent reason for miles. At least he managed to keep it in one lane, albeit too slowly for the lane he was in (#1, of course). * One incident in which the young female passenger's head disappeared from view for some time and the subsequent lane and speed control of the young male driver became, ah, questionable. Not being much interested in watching that sort of thing, and intensely interested in keeping my distance from people driving randomly at high speeds, I didn't find out for sure whether I'd have won the obvious bet on what was happening in there. Whatever it was, they either gave up or succeeded, as his driving eventually became more normal once again. * Two incidents in which somebody rubbernecking an earlier accident had one of his own, right in front of the cop. * One in which a notably aggressive solo driver in a ratty older Corvette, in traffic heavy enough (I-5 in central California, headed back to the city for the workweek) that it did not reward any attempt at all to go faster than the flow, ducked out of sight for a frightening fraction of a minute. I would be shocked, shocked, to learn that he was snorting a line off the center console. He tailgated everybody, cut off me, cut off a semi, etc., before and after that stunt, all for so little gain that I had a good view of him for a long time. At one point he seemingly tried to provoke an Acura NSX into racing, but the NSX guy wasn't having any. Eventually he found a hole in traffic and got out far enough that my concern dwindled to a vague hope that he wouldn't have an accident ahead of me while trying to force his way through the next pack. --Joe "Don't forget, http://www.nearmiss-report.org" Chew |

I was driving home at about 5:30 last night. It is a twisty up and down two lane road posted at 50 mph. The lead car seems to be driven by someone intoxicated. They kept slowing down and speeding up, and they couldn't keep it in the lane. There was another car between me and the lead car, so I couldn't get a real good look. The car in front of me was wisely keeping their distance. Well, he slowed down and then accelerated real fast. Couldn't keep it on the road, and swerved onto a gravel driveway leading to a contruction site. He ran across the face of the driveway and hit the ditch on the other side. The car leap into the air, all wheels atleast two feet off the ground. Landed in the ditch and bounced out onto the road. He kept on driving and never stopped, even though he left some parts behind in the ditch. I can't believe that his car was still driveable after that. I can believe that a driver would take off like that. The car could have been a some sort of Honda coupe. I couldn't get close enoght to make an ID. Doug |

The only car they make that's interesting these days is the prius. One would be stupid to buy their trucks when the competition is many times better. East- |
