Default Killed another engine mount....

Damn, but it is hard to bitch about having too much traction....

My 33x9.5 BFG muds just don't spin, so they put amazing stresses on my
engine mounts, wheel locking hubs and u-joints.

I blew a hub earlier this spring and just found two new bolts snapped
off in it so I have to pull it and try to get the stubs out.

Then the muffler shop was crying about a bad engine mount so I looked
and sure enough I had just shattered the sucker.

I didn't tear the metal off the rubber pad, I shattered the metal!

I have lost count, but I think that is the 4th or 5th blown mount over 5
or 6 years.

Oh well, 'you play you pay' as they say and we sure had/have fun
breaking it....

:-)

These are stock mounts, yes? Does M.O.R.E. or anyone else make something for
your CJ that might not break?

Yeah they do.

But strengthen your motor mounts and what breaks next? Hopefully a u-joint.

Just thinking aloud he I wonder if there might not be a useful "fuse"
effect at work here. If Mike finds stronger motor mounts and installs
them the next weakest link will break when he beats on his Jeep. The
next weakest link might not be so friendly.

That is one reason I haven't considered a solid mount. As it is I am
tearing my frame to shreds and having a mount that won't give or flex is
a good way to break something really expensive. A mount every couple
years isn't too bad.

Didn't old-timey stock car builders install chain restraints on motor
mounts? Or am I making that part up?

Nope, you are remembering right. Mine has a safety bar across the
bottom as well as over stress latches on the mounts so if the rubber
tears, the engine can't lift out or fall out. Now with a shattered
mount like this last one, that bottom bar could be useful....

Hi Lee,
All motor mounts from the early seventies on are made to
interlocked so they still hold the engine from flopping over. Forties
years ago we would regularly hear of a car starting off in reverse and
because the engine with a broken left mount would flop to the right
under torque jamming the throttle wide open, sending the old Buick
dynaflow at sixty miles an hour in reverse. Last one I remember went
straight through a motel.
