Default Questions on restoring stainless

I've been trying to find a good way to polish stainless trim on a 59
Impala. All the info I've found on the net starts with 220 or 320 grit
sandpaper to remove sratches, then polish...just to be safe I started
with 1500 grit and that even leave scratches that a dremel and polish
wont take out. I'm obviously missing something here. Any suggestions?
Thanks - Curt

Use tripoli polish with a hard felt wheel on your dremel. Keep the wheel moving
and clean excess polish off the steel with a cotton rag fairly frequently. If
you don't clean it off, polish will build up in the scratches and make for more
work. If you have problems with this technique, try a soft wheel and use the one
that you like best. The soft wheel won't cause polish buildup in the scratches,
but it also won't work as rapidly.

After that's done to your satisfaction, you can get a mirror finish by polishing
with green rouge polish and a soft wheel.

Don't hit the paint with either compound.
