Others have already posted good stopping techniques, so I won't rehash them.

I've never had it happen to me, but based on the many ways already mentioned
to stop a car, I can only believe that folks that get into accidents like
that don't have the proper mindset to be behind the wheel anyway. If you
can't either a) calmly think your way through the problem at hand, or b)
react automatically and properly, you shouldn't be out there.

Why do people use washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, microwaves,
vacuum cleaners, automatic transmissions, air conditioners, electric light
bulbs, or telephones? You can do without all of those things, but when I
have hundreds of miles to eat up, I'll use the cruise control, thank you.
YOU can hold the damned pedal until your feet cramp up on you. No skin off

Yes, I had it happen on a 1984 Ford Escort Wagon 5-Speed with a 1.8 HO
engine. Happened about three times. Each time I was interstate cruising in
5th gear, so it wasn't a problem with the engine overpowering the brakes and
getting the car off to the shoulder by using only the brakes. Nothing would
disengage the CC. Not the Brakes. Not the off switch (or "coast" button).
Not the clutch. Each time it disengaged after the ignition was cut (after
getting off the road and allowing the engine to "stall" in 5th gear).

You never know, it might be "skin off my back," if you encounter him
and his cramped-up and/or asleep right foot can't find the brake
pedal....

Don't do much long distance driving, I take it? As someone else
mentioned, try driving through a state like NV or TX w/o C.C. and report
back to us.

> It's nothing but trouble waiting to happen.

Only for an inattentive and/or incompetent driver.

> Besides, it's one less thing that you have control over...

Says who? So long as it has an "off," switch and only the driver can
activate/deactivate it, I have complete control over it.

The cruise on both of my Saab 900's were dead when I got them...

So I fixed them, and garnered a whole lot of factory and outside info on
how the system works, and it's pretty typical

Basically when you turn on the cruise, the cruise computer is turned on
The APC (turbocharger boost control) is turned off, so the max turbo
pressure is approx 1/2 bar. When the SET SPEED button is applied, the
speed reading off the speedometer monitored by the computer is set. So
the car will maintain 140km/h (87mph) and it will apply extra throttle
if the car slows to 139 and back off at 141. If the SET SPEED is held
in, the car will accelerate moderately. Not nearly as fast as with the
cruise off and your foot floored, but perhaps an increase of 2km/h/s
(two kilometres per hour per second), about the same as putting it to
RESUME if the car is going slow. Definately controllable. If the brake
pedal or clutch is even tapped a slight amount, the cruise is turned off
instantly. Not only does this disable the electronic portion of the
system, it also breaks the vacuum to the vac motor that physically holds
down the accelerator pedal, so if the computer went bezerk the cruise
still goes off. Press SET SPEED again and it will take the new speed.
Hold the switch to TIP will slow the car.

So I have no idea of how you can make it accelerate without purposely
taking the vac hose off and sucking on it...
