Default 1998 sl1 codes

I have a 1998 sl1 vin code "8" The ses light is on and I need to
get it off so it will pass ny state inspection. The light will come on
and off. Off in cooler weather and comes on after the car has gotten
hot after a while.
I have got the codes that are tripping it, they are
P0706 and P0741
The most trouble I have seen in the shifting is usually into last gear
sometimes it won't shift and will run at 2500 to 2700 rpm's at 55 mph.
I just changed the transmission fluid, It didn't seem to help much.
Any ideas anyone could offer would be greatly apperciated. Thanks

Symptoms are correct for the code. I'd have to look at this more closely
but usually the problem that comes up sometimes is the harness plugin at
the transmission doesnt make a good clean connection. It is circular and
plugs in on top of the transmission below the airbox IIRC.
-------------------------------------
P0706 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off
-------------------------------------
Conditions for Setting the DTC P0706

DTC P0706 is set when the PCM has detected an invalid bit pattern for
more than 3.5 seconds, twice per ignition cycle.

The difference between DTC P0706 and DTC P0705 is that a possible bit
pattern error due to misadjustment could set a DTC P0706.
-------------------------------------
Conditions for Setting the DTC P0741

DTC P0741 is set when the PCM has detected the following conditions for
more than 7.5 seconds twice per ignition cycle:

* The transaxle fluid temperature is above 20°C (68°F).
* No engine or input shaft speed, or signal noise DTCs.
* Engine speed is greater than 908 RPM.
* Input shaft speed is greater than 224 RPM.
* TCC has been commanded ON for more than 5 seconds and there has
been no gear change.
* Speed difference across the torque converter is greater than 280
RPM.

Check the solenoids first. One that controls the shift into 4th gear may no
longer be working properly. I posted a simple procedure in Saturn Fans and
also in this newsgroup over a year ago. It takes 5 minutes and only
requires a metric socket and a Digital Ohm Meter.

I have check the wiring harness, connections all look good. I checked
the solenoids as Bob had suggested. All of them read 6.5 +/- .1ohm
"cold". I don't know if these would mean that all of the solenoids are
bad or is there something else I can check????? Thanks Chris

The 6.5 ohms for all means they are all good "when cold". If the problem
occurs repeatably all the time, then they are not likely the problem.
