Are we seeing new diesels in the SUV market?
I am hearing about Dodge bringing out a diesel-electric Ram pickup?
What about the diesel Jeep Liberty or the diesel LR Discovery? |

Yes. They are "common rail" engines. This means that the fuel is maintained at injection pressure in a high pressure passage and an electrically actuated injector simply admits the fuel-the energy for injection pressure comes from a mechanical pump driven by the engine. Cummins PT and Detroit Diesel mechanical and DDEC are also "common rail" engines, but the actual energy for injection-several horsepower-comes via the engine camshaft which actuates the injector which pressurizes the fuel. The Italians, surprisingly enough, were the people behind this. |
