Default Electric windows in a golf question

Hi

I've got a problem with the electric windows in a 1994 Golf 1.8GL.
The front passenger window works ok using the switch on the front
passenger door.
The switch on the drivers door which works the front passenger window
only puts the window up whether pressing the bottom or top of the
button.
The switch on the drivers door which works the drivers door window
won't open the window but you can hear some noise in the door like a
motor or something isn't catching, a sort of stuttering. If I put on
the outside lights the switches and buttons light up. Then, if I use
the switch on the front passenger door and the front passenger window
switch on the drivers door all other lit up buttons, switches stay the
same, but if I use the drivers window switch all the other button and
switch lights go dim, like the energy is being drawn away from them.
The back 2 windows don't work from their window switches or the
switches on the dashboard.
Is this a major problem or is it something like fuses, relays, maybe
faulty connections?
If I open the front passenger window using the switch on the same
door, then use the corresponding switch on the drivers door it will
close the window whether pressed at the top or the bottom of the
switch, I figure this might be a wiring problem in the driver door
switch?
I've just got the car and can't get a manual till monday

thanks for any help

Just sounds like you've got a screwed up switch on the drivers door. If the
passenger door switch works the window normally then the motor & regulator
are working fine. The lights go dim when using the drivers door switch
because the window is trying to go up when already closed. This will draw a
lot of AMPS & cause the lights to dim while holding the switch. I would
start by trying another drivers door switch.

thanks for replying

I've also got a passat so took the switch from the driver door in the
passat and tried it in the golf but have the same problem. Tried the
switch from the golf in the passat and it works ok.
Got hold of a manual today and according to that all the windows and
electric mirrors are on one fuse F14, so because the mirrors work ok
and one of the windows works I reckon it's not a fuse problem.
Do you know what else there is along the wire from door switch to
motor? There's a mention of a Thermo fuse for windows but can't find
that anywhere and presume if it was blown then all windows would stop
working?
Also the problem of the passenger door switch on the driver door. It
will only close the passenger window but not open it? Wiring?
I've had the panels off today but can't see any problem with the
wiring. The motor thing inside the driver door is definately trying to
do something, you can feel it. Presumably the driver window switch
works then cos it's activating the motor?
Does it look like the motors/regulators are knackered? What would I
need to buy to fix the problem?

thanks a lot

The thermal switch for the windows is usually inside the motor itself. Also
while you have the door panel off I would check the wires at the door hinge.
I have seen the break in the tube going from the door to the body & short
together.

Checked the tubes from the doors and low and behold - the drivers side
speaker wires are all cut but not the motor/switch wires.
All the wires for the switches/motors in the back doors have been cut
and taped up? The plugs for the motors weren't even plugged in?

On a previous golf I had which had manual windows the cables had
frayed on the window regulators making it very difficult for the
windows to open. On the golf I have now the driver door motor makes a
noise when you press the switch. Could it be like my old manual in
that the motor is trying to lower the regulator but the cable is
knackered and the noise is the motor struggling to turn? Therefore
needing a new regulator and not a motor?

I've not had this golf long and don't want to start getting parts till
I know for sure what parts I actually need. The manual isn't much help
on this.

thanks for your help

If the window works perfectly from the passenger door switch than there is
nothing wrong with the motor or regulator. You have an electrical problem
only. Not mechanical.
