GTR online problem
Hi folks,
you can probably tell how desperate I am when I'm posting to web forums 8-P, but I have a problem I have come across driving GTR online. Thanks in advance, uwe ################################################## #################### I am having strange MP problems in GTR: every five to ten seconds or so, the view will "twitch" ever so slightly when the game synchronises the online session. Sometimes, the viewing angle will change and snap back, at other times, the car will accelerate or move about the track a metre or so (which is usually fatal when entering a corner on the edge ;-) I've tried setting all kinds of line speeds, from modem to dsl, but haven't been able to get rid of this symptom. xp2400+, geforce 4800 se (128mb), 512mb ddr ram nvidia 61.xx drivers (latest version), win98se, sblive! value, tsw2 wheel connected to the gameport. connectivity is of course 128/768 kbit, sorry for the mix-up. The windows machine sits behind a linux gateway, connected over 10mbit/sec ethernet. for other players it's reportedly "smooth as silk", even over a modem, and ping times are in the low 100's usually 70-80ms, sometimes better). Frame rate is around 30-40, depending on the track. The effect is visible in both semi-pro and simulation sessions and in races with just a couple of drivers or a dozen. ################################################## #################### -- mail replies to Uwe at schuerkamp dot de ( yahoo address is spambox) Uwe Schuerkamp //////////////////////////// http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (52.0N/8.5E) GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61 |

All that stuff is well out of date, especially live/gameport. I remember some sort of issue with GPL with reguard to online and direct X vs Papy code for steering choice - this is why I'm suss about that gameport. Any problems offline? |

This is probably the sychro bug that is well known. It happens when others
join and only in practice sessions. Once the field is set you won't have the problem during the race. It's hard to describe, but very irritating when taking a corner on the limit. The car will accelerate randomly for bit (revs will jump audibly), the lateral position on the car might change, the viewing angle might flip to the right or to the left and then flip back, and it happens at nearly regular intervals of five to ten seconds when racing online, no matter if there are sixteen people racing or two or three. It looks like a warping problem, only that it's my car that's warping, not the others 8-P The problem persists during the race, too. Any ideas what might be causing this? The same rig runs all other sims fine online (including LFS, which uses the DX routines I think), so I'd be very reluctant to update or change any of the components just to "play around" and see if the problem persists or not. If you mean "virus and worm incompatible" by "well out of date", well, I'd rather stay out of date then ;-) Cheers & thanks for your reply, uwe -- mail replies to Uwe at schuerkamp dot de ( yahoo address is spambox) Uwe Schuerkamp //////////////////////////// http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (52.0N/8.5E) GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61 |

One thing to do is FREEZE your wheel/pedals just as you feel it begin. I got so that I could ride these out fairly well. You can almost anticipate them and just as the screen pauses, stop everything, don't let off the gas, just hold everything for that brief moment, then you should be able to at least stay on the road. I wonder if using the latest drivers with the 4800 is such a good idea. Those cards seemed to be happiest with late 4x.xx drivers I thought. I was under the impression that most of the later releases of drivers were targeted at the GPU era cards...5900 etc. If the skipping happens just randomly, then I'm not familiar with that. Good luck dh |

It seems that the steering wheel/x-axis twitching we always get in Windows game calibration was raising it's ugly head. As the x-axis twitched it was multiplied by the Look-To-Apex option. The cure was to turn the Look-To-Apex option down to 0 (Options/Realism/Look-To- Apex) Don |

For me, the effect does not happen in offline mode, it's only visible in online play, so I guess it's something network related.
