Default Smoking Mazda MPV - Help?

MPV 91 130K. Replaced heads exaust system, water pump, timing belt and
thermostat (it overheats in street driving only in hot weather). It has
lots of power.

My problem is black visible smoke? Any ideas?

Thank you

Black smoke usually means a fuel problem - car is running too rich.
White smaoke means bad rings/valves and car is burning oil. With 130K
miles, the fuel injection system could be worn out and one or more of
the injectors is leaking, causing the too-rich condition and black
smoke. There could also be one or more faulty sensors feeding bogus
data to the fuel injection computer, causing it to inject too much
fuel. The possibility of bad sensors can be diagnosed by a mechanic
with appropriate equipment, and the faulty sensor replaced, probably
for not too much money. If the fuel injection system itself is worn
out, with leaky injectors, the cost to repair might exceed what the
whole car is worth with that many miles on it. The MPV is Mazda's
cheapest model, right? Same car as the Ford Escort? If so, with 130K
miles the whole car is probably not worth more than $1500 even in
perfect working order. If it is an automatic transmission, you are
likely going to experience a VERY expensive transmission failure in
the not-to-distant future, as my experience has been that Ford Escort
trannys rarely last more than 120K miles before going belly-up. You
might want to not put more than a minimal amount of money into fixing
this car, as it is probably not going to last a whole lot longer
before something major-expensive goes wrong with it.
