In the '20s, each GM brand got a partner: Buick and Marquette, Cadillac and LaSalle, Oakland and Pontiac. Come to think of it, did Chevrolet get a little brother? Anyway, Pontiac was the only nameplate that survived, cannibalizing its elder sibling Oakland. Also Yellow Cab and Scripps-Booth. Rapid was the predecessor to GMC. Oops, you said passenger cars. > MoPar - DeSoto and Plymouth Imperial. A separate brand from Chrysler. If you include the American Motors heritage, there are Hudson, Essex, Terraplane, Rambler, and Nash. Not to mention Willys and Overland. -- -Stephen H. Should mention that the Acadian models were the Canso and later in the
70s, after the division was closed, Pontiac took the model name and ended up with the Pontiac Acadian which fueled a lot of confusion. There were Canada only brands too - as well as a whole horde of different Model names that were not their own division. Ford and Lincoln Mercury still co-exist on paper, I believe, but ther are no longer Lincoln Mercury dealers. Only Ford dealers now. Chev/Olds /Cadillac will be Chev/Cadillac, while Pontiac Buick still co-exists. Chrysler? I believe Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep are now all one division of Daimler Chrysler, with Plymouth out of the mix. In the early Sixties Valiant was it's own brand, not a model, as was the Imperial. Model names that have dissapeared include Neon, Continental, New Yorker, Coronet, Charger, Satelite, Acadian, Beaumont, Canso, Polara, and hundreds more |
