Yeah,I'll bet dental hygienists really like working on smokers filthy
mouths....No wonder they went to wearing masks.

Even a "clean" smoker will stink up a car.That's why National Car Rental
will charge a smoker a -hefty- fee for violating their no-smoking rule.

All sorts of things cause bad breath, Jim. Not just smokers. If looking in
other people's filthy mouths groosses them out then they should look for
another line of work, don't you think? Because that's just about all a
dentist does is look in other people's mouths, filthy and otherwise.

What about people who spill food/drinks/coffee in the rental car? Or who
use it to transport dirty materials? They cause far more common and
extensive damage than smokers. People leave all sorts of messes in rental
cars.

If you dirty up a rental car, you have to pay to have it cleaned up
regardless of whether or not you smoke. If you think that returning filthy
rental cars is a problem restricted only to smokers, I suggest you need to
get out of the house more often.

Which probably did not happen as often as autos stunk up by smokers.

I suspect it's harder to clean up smokers odors and films than localized
stains.Or burns.

However,the no-smoking clause is specific.
There had to be a reason for that.

Oddly enough, no. Though those do seem to be nicotine withdrawal
symptoms in some cases.

Oh yeah. Familes with small children or teens (or both) NEVER rent cars.
And if they do, they're quite neat and tidy.

And people who eat in cars are also always neat and tidy. They never leave
behind fast food bags and containers, or ever spill a drop of soda/milkshake
on the upholstery.

It's all damage that has to be cleaned up. That's the point, Jim.

So is the "Fill Gas Tank Before Returning Car" rule, or "Don't Leave a Huge
Frigging Mess" rule. They're all the same.

Bottom line: return the car in the same good condition and repair as you
found it when you checked it out. No need to single out smokers.

The reason to single out smokers is, despite what some smokers believe, one
cannot bring a car back in the same condition after having smoking in it.

Correct. Spilled Slurpees, dropped Whoppers, even crayons ground into the
upholstery can be cleaned up "all the way gone".

Cigarette smoke *cannot*. Doesn't matter how carefully it's cleaned,
sprayed, steamed, special charcoal candles burned in the closed car,
special incantations chanted, etc. the stink remains.

Except they they DID single out smokers.
They obviously felt that it was necessary.
There's still a large enough group of smokers to not alienate them
unnecessarily,but they *did*.
