Default Reminder Mountain Drivers--Pull Over

I experienced an extremely aggravating situation coming down State Road 77
from Globe to Winkleman to Tucson in Arizona. That is of course the dreaded
"parade" scenario--one driver going about 20 mph on a curvy mountain road
stubbornly refusing to pull over to let others buy. The length of cars was
over 50.

This is a reminder--you have no moral right to do this. Your moral
obligation is to move over. You are NOT there to experience the scenery at
everyone else's expense. Just because you want to drive 20 mph and eat up an
entire afternoon does not mean everyone else wants to. How DARE you impose.

I do not know if AZ is one of the states that tickets for this. Frankly,
even if it is, I don't think the penalty is high enough. I am THIS close to
saying that for 2nd offenses it should be a felony, with 5 years of jail as
a possible punishment. Maybe that's going overboard, but certainly--this is
a VERY hugely aggravating situation for dozens of people involved stuck
behind these drivers, and the message needs to be delivered--we're not going
to tolerate it. You need to remember, your desire to "smell the roses" and
your assertion that I need to do the same NEVER excuses this outrageous
behavior. Those pull-out exits are there for a reason--use it.

I dare say--if someone is being bull-headed about it and won't move, I'd
love to see a "fall guy" situation occur--where the car immediately behind
decides for the sake of all behind him/her to physically rear-end and
physically damage the offender. You know, "take one for the team." Naturally
of course that is a lot to ask--and honestly, I wouldn't. But wouldn't it be
great to see the message delivered that emphatically that we're not going to
tolerate this nonsense?

Of course, if the police would target this situation much more aggressively
rather than the petty crap like someone going 40 mph in a 35 mph zone (where
35mph is too slow anyway), if these people were made to be held accountable
for this nonsense--we wouldn't need or even want "fall guys." More than
that, if people wouldn't commit this atrocity to being with, better still.

your over-the-top venting aside (and i don't blame you, that can be pretty
aggravating ;-) )...

i agree with you... that kind of driving is the kind of unbelieveably
selfish, me-first attitude that unfortunately mars much of human social
behavior. the car provides a nice insulation that normal person-to-person
contact simply wouldn't allow. there is little that one can do except to
demand through honking, light flashing, etc, for the person in front to pull
out.

on the other hand, i do think a lot of the little courtesies that drivers
extend each other tend to get overlooked... i think there is more courtesy
than rudeness, it's just that the courtesy is easily forgotten while the
rudeness is hard to let go, especially in a case as blatant as yours.

i feel badly for people who *live* in those places (and don't drive up and
down once a year on vacation) like the mountain communities north of san
bernardino. i've talked to many locals up there who *despise* the
"flatlanders" and their road-hogging ways. they have to drive those roads
*each day* for work!

I hear ya! Amen brother!!

Here in California I believe it's actually a LAW and the number of cars
is 5 -- if there's 5 cars behind ya because you are being a slow-poke
you need to pull over (when it's safe, of course) and let the others
pass you. Of course, more than half the time, these half-wits don't do
that and it annoys the holy bejeezus out of me. I drive to the
mountains **a lot** to visit family, and I always run into this. I'm
thinking execution might be called for ... you were way too lenient in
your sentencing for their offenses, Larry! :-)

You didn't say what the posted SL is. You said this occured on a "curvy
mountain road" so 20 mph is probably the posted SL and the correct one.
You are a psychopath for getting unglued at people who simply want to
drive safely and legally.

I grew up in the mountains, driving on curvy mountain roads. I've never
seen a speed limit as low as 20MPH unless it was in a school zone where
psychopaths drive 41MPH. The MFFY in the original post was not driving
safely, nor legally. -Dave

Odd, the mountains around here have much higher posted limits. Oddly
enough, though the terrain doesn't change much, the speed limits in one
state seem to be 10mph higher for the same type of terrain as in the
neighboring states. This is strange as the bulk of the mountains, as
far as the two states mentioned are concerned, are in the state with
the higher limits. So much for fairly and scientifically set speed
limits

And you're a retard for believing that everyone is as stupid as you
are, and have to drive their vehicles at retardedly low speeds to
maintain control of them.

The statutory speed limit on "narrow, winding mountain highways" in
Colorado is 20 MPH but I've never seen a paved mountain road in the
east that demanded such a low speed for any significant distance.
Usually such low speeds are only appropriate and hairpin curves.

Hopefully those serious collisions result from the driver attempting to
pass pulling back into traffic traveling in the same direction, and
into the side of the car creating the road block. At least this way,
the person causing the road block doesn't walk away unphased, and
perhaps the people behind this road jam will wait for police (if
neccessary) to describe the situation.

At least in this case, the OP was fortunate enough to survive the
situation and merely write about it in the groups. I would be
concerned, though, that not everyone is as calm and collected as the
OP, and sooner or later one of these rolling road blockers is going to
**** off someone who's going to follow them to wherever they are going
and beat them even more senseless with a tire iron.
