Default Head up display in BMW 5 series

I am looking into setting up a Head Up display for a car. I have never
used one and I will appreciate any comments! The new BMW 5 series will
have it as an extra but I'm not planning to buy this car in the near
future :-)

What concerns me, is that the image will appear to be, say, one metre
from the driver while the driver has to see further away. Is this a
problem? And how useful is the whole thing? (I know, it looks cool but
how useful is?)

All comments very welcome!

Andreas
