As far as I know, the 3-speed transmission was only offered after the
1999 or so model year in the standard (short-wheelbase) Caravan and
then only with the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine.

I have a 2002 Caravan with the 2.4L 4 cyl and the 3 -speed.
It was one of the last Caravans made with the 3-speed since they made
the 4 speed transmission standard equipment in all Caravans starting
mid-year in 2002.

The 3-speed transmission was also Chrysler built - nothing to do with
Mitsubishi. It is a traditional non-electronically controlled
transmission with bands versus clutches.
