I do it sometimes, but only if there is either nobody in front of me in
the left lane or there is a left turn pocket or the left lane has a turn
arrow (for obvious reasons - what would that be, MCFM?)

Here's something that I do... Imagine approaching a red signal and there
are two lanes going straight. I am in the right lane. There is nobody
waiting at the red signal in either of the lanes going straight. I'll
move over to the left lane to allow the right to be clear to make a
right on red.

Am I being too considerate? I don't see anyone else doing this.

I do that as well. But, there are times when I don't do this (e. g.,
when I have to take a right turn not too far from the intersection. In
those cases, I make an effort to keep my car in the left-most part of
the right lane to compensate.

You forget that not everyone is as smart as you. Hell, 90% of people
aren't.

I usually do it. I also try to move over as far left as possible to let
cars squeeze by on my right in "wide" lanes that can accomodate right
turners. It's never bitten me in the butt yet and I'm sure people are
appreciative -- I know I am when someone lets me by.

I *could* see a situation where it could end causing a problem for me, i.e.
a too-large vehicle tries to squeeze thru and ends up hitting me, but like I
said, hasn't happened yet... guess I'll keep doing it...

I do it. And have for as long as I've been driving...which, alas, is a
rather long time.

Something that REALLY ****es me off when I do that is to see a car
coming up behind me (in the left lane), knowing that they saw me move
over [to leave the right lane clear for turning], and then THEY pull
into the right lane. And block it. For the whole ****ing signal. It's
like, why the hell do they THINK I moved over?

Nah, that would come under the very old heading of NGDGU (No Good Deed
Goes Unpunished).

I don't run into that situation around here. Again, 95% of the roads I
travel are two lane seconardy roads and residential streets. The only
road I know that has a marked bicycle lane is Allentown Rd in
Towamencien. The other disclaimer I want to be noted is I drive a bus.
With that in mind, I keep to the right. The last thing I want is a car on
my right side, especially if I'm making a left turn. The backend of the
bus can swing 2-3 feet in the oppisite direction. So, if I'm making a
left, I will position my bus as to keep cars out of that swing zone. Many
times it blocks cars from passing me on the right. *I am not doing this
to be MIFFY*, if my bus connects with another vehicle at that time, I'm
on the hook. Doesn't matter that passing a school bus on the right is
illegal. Keep this in mind when manueavering around buses.

When driving my car, I give room if possible.

Doug
