I get stuck behind these people all the time here in S.E. Michigan on
two lane surface roads which typically have 45-50 mph limit. The BIG
problem is that you get screwed out of making the lights at every mile
since they are timed for driving the speed limit.

I believe some lights are timed to PREVENT "making all the lights",it's
part of "traffic calming" as the traffic engineers define it.
It keeps average vehicle speeds down.

I am sure they are... however usually going faster or hammering the
acceleration when caught at red can result in chaining green signals.

And once again "bad" behavior is rewarded and "good" punished. Why
fight it?

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but certain accounting practices can
result in a fully-depreciated one.
