Brake lights fail / tails lights on permanently

Anyone got ANY idea whet to look for here?

The dashboard "bulb failure" light has just started to show on my 156
1.8 SportWagon. At first it only went on while braking, but by the
time I was able to inspect the lights it was on permanently.

I now find that I have NO brake lights working at all and that my tail
lights will not go out, even when the engine is stopped and the
ignition key removed. All the fuses seem ok.

Is this a fault somewhere in the electronics or elsewhere?

Is it just the tail lights that are on all the time, or side lights also?
There is a parking light position on the ignition, just a thought...

I gave up trying to find the fault and took it to my local alfa
franchise who diagnosed a faulty rev counter. This might seem to be a
strange item to replace for light problems, but I understand that the
rev counter houses all the light failure sensors which are presumably
at fault. I'm going to get the new part and fit it myself as it is
only held in by three very accessible screws.
