Default New beetle back brake pads tsb.

A couple years ago when I brought my New Beetle in for service I was
told that my back brakes needed replacing. They said that because there
was a defect in the pads that caused them to prematurely wear out that
all I would have to pay for was the parts ($277) and vw would pay for
the labor. I have since talked to a couple of beetle owners that said
that vw picked up the whole bill on the same repair. Did I get ripped
off?
