Leaking Spider & it's not the roof.
The first question everybody asks me is,
"Why haven't you done anything about it before?" Well I tried! Purchased in 1998, it's leaked from new. It's only now that I've really started experimenting to discover the route the water is taking. Frustratingly, it's been very easy. Some of the water running down the windscreen on the passenger's side will pass under the trim (skuttle panel) at the base of the windscreen. Immediately below the skuttle panel is a splash guard preventing the water from running into the intake for the ventilation system. At the base of the intake is the ventilation fan, which is accessible from the passenger footwell. Water drips into the intake filling the fan with water, before it overflows and spills into the footwell! The splash guard is attached to a lip that runs along the width of the car. The splash guard rests below the lip except for two small raised edges that slot above the lip so securing the splash guard to it. Water that's passed under the skuttle panel runs off the top of the lip onto the splash guard. However due to the capillarity properties of water, it is squeezed back between the lower part of the lip and the splash guard. The water then drips over the rear of the splash guard and into the air intake. Bingo, wet feet! What I find strange is that the lip has a raised edge to it, to form a channel that water can run along, but only on the drivers side. This works so well I can not understand why there is no raised edge on the passenger side. Should there be a raised edge which in this instance was never welded on? The solution appears quite simple, use Duck tape or sealant, but what bothers me is in all the garages I've been to none have experienced anything similar. Apologies for the essay Suggestions please.
