Default 1985 Plymouth Reliant 2.2L California Smog Check TEST ONLY

For the second biennial period, I am required to have my 1985 Plymouth Reliant
smog checked at a California TEST ONLY smog station. The first time went as
well as can be expected. This year the operator said he had the fail the
vehicle because the "Check Engine" light did not come on when the ignition key
is turned.

For all of the hours of research I've done, I can't find evidence there is such
a light but his book indicates there should be and it is activated by a
particular code.

Can anybody positively tell me that any 1985 Plymouth Reliant 2.2L engine
has such a light/lamp? Or that it does not? Checking two auto parts websites,
Kragen & Auto Zone provides no evidence of a replacement lamp being available
and no proof one ever existed.

A response to this newsgroup would be greatly appreciated.
