Default blazer electrical problem

I have a 1985 Chevy Blazer. The problem is with the gauges on the dash.
They work fine for a while and then go nuts-- shut down, move around,
etc. It affects the oil, amp, fuel, and water temp gauges, as well as
the signal indicators and radio (basically everything on the dash).
Most of the time when you start the car, everything works fine at idle.
But pull out of the driveway or turn on the headlights and the gauges
go nuts. I noticed that adjusting the dimmer switch often "cured"
things for a moment, so I replaced the light switch-- didn't help
anything. The headlights, tail lights, etc seem fine. Any ideas would
be appreciated.

sounds like a ground problem. It may be finding ground via an alternate path
through your dimmer.

Failed ground to the dash or the body ground from battery to chassis.

Just a guess. It must be finding ground thru the speedo cable.
