("Thru" may be considered a word now?) Anyway the word "thru" came about due to "drive-thru's" at fast food restaurants. This was so the signs for this would be smaller and less expensive. If they had spelled the signs "Drive-Through", then AUTOS would have scrapped the signs as they went by because the signs would have been too big!
