Your response would appear to be an apology for your bashing, so I
will assume it is and graciously accept it. However, the fact remains
that in six posts on this thread, you have yet to provide any
information that would be useful to the OP in making his decision. You
have stated that you disagree with me and that my post is not in
keeping with the facts. You don't want to "bore me with examples", but
please do so. I can assure you that I will not be bored. I would like
to hear your opinions AND why you believe them to be true. Maybe
you're right and I am wrong. Maybe we're both right. Maybe we're both
wrong. Maybe I'm right and you're wrong. But just saying that I am
wrong without providing any information to back up your claim is of no
use to anyone, especially the OP.

That is correct. I don't know enough about "the package" to comment. It was
in following the thread that I came upon your post and responded to what you
said.

Okay, just one:

3. Cross-drilled brake rotors. IMO, this is mainly a cosmetic thing.

The purpose of cross drilling rotors is to reduce heat buildup-a critical
issue for aggressive driving and one that is done very often for very good
reasons. Some "kids" do it for appearance, and I've even seen cars with drum
brakes having "pretend" drilled rotors installed over to, to mimic the look
of the real things - which are a performance improvement.

There is no need for you to believe me, and I don't really need to quote 3rd
party sources to back up what I already know. BUT, just to show you I'm not
all bad, here is just one web source's comments:
KVR Crossdrilled Rotors

Why should you upgrade to cross drilled rotors?

Simply stated, the function of any vehicles brake system is to stop the
vehicle. This is accomplished by absorbing the kinetic energy stored in the
moving vehicle, and converting it into heat. The friction caused by the
brake pad rubbing on the rotor is the source of this heat. The more quickly
and efficiently that heat can be absorbed and dissipated, the more quickly
and efficiently the car will stop.

There are several contributing factors to this heat reduction. One of
the most common sources of heat is from the gases produced by the bonding
agents of the brake pad burning off. Under severe braking, this can actually
produce a boundary layer of gas that pushes the pad away from the rotor,
which can lead to excessive brake fade. The cross-drilled holes or slots in
a rotor provide an escape path for these gasses (de-gassing or out-gassing
are common terms), and allow the pad to stay in contact with the rotor. As
well as de-gassing, cross drilling or slotting will provide better wet
weather braking as water is swept through the holes, or down the slots.

A vented rotor can be viewed as an air fan. When in motion, the vents
draw air from the center of the rotor outward. This air flow, over an
increased internal surface area, effectively dissipates rotor heat. Cross
drilling adds to this air flow, as well as providing additional rotor
surface cooling.

If you want more information do a google on "cross drilled rotors". And do
one on the other points I disagreed with. I think you will find that I know
of which I speak.

While I appreciate that you prefaced your comments with "In my opinion",
that doesn't absolve you of anything or give your opinions any weight. While
opinions can be subjective (like wrt a painting or movie), you can still
have an incorrect or wrong opinion.

Hi folks, thanx for the replies. I am not interested in any other
cars, I am buying the M3 for sure. I love the luxury features in
sports cars and I previuosly added a Phatnoise mp3 player to my 330 ci
which I still own and want to install it in the M3.

I will not take this car to the track so I thing it makes sense to get
the automatic transmission and 18 inch wheels, 'cause I also like the
softer ride.

I also liked the idea of upgrading the tires and the brakes instead of
the competition package so I will investigate in that.

BTW I took the test drive of the SMG (with competition pack.) and I
had hard times to achieve a smooth trasmission using all the settings
that were available. The salesman looked like he did not have enough
experience in the SMG. But the brakes were fabulous?! but then another
sales person in the dealership told me he owns one with SMG and he
swears that he can achieve smooth transmission using the setting to
the middle.

Thanks again for your help, and take it easy guys

By automatic, I assume you mean the SMG - or does BMW offer the Steptronic
in non U.S. markets?

At any rate, enjoy your M3!

Tom

The 17's will provide a "softer' ride than the 18's.

M3's don't come with 17's as an option, except for winter tires.

Mea Culpa, wasn't paying attention and was thinking 330i.
