Default Tinkering with the rF proton mod files

First, you have to read the following CAREFULLY:

What Dave describes alters the hdv file of the proton
mod and the engine file of the proton mod and makes it KAPUT for
sucessful online competion. Plus it uses a beta exe that also
prevents you from joining in. DO NOT do any of the following on
your main RF install. make a copy...preferably on another drive.

I just ran an offline race at the short Nuerburgring(F1 GP course minus
the Ford Curve and the long run down to the 180 hairpin and the Audi
Chicane)

A first lap schmozzle brought out the safety car, I, did get caught up
in the first turn mayhem, but only after being punted from behind. Once
the safety car gathered up the field I determined to pit to fix the damage.
Since I was running two X fuel and tires, I would also need more fuel to
finish the 23 laps and I decided to have the air pressure changed on some
of the tires as well. unfortunately, EVERYBODYELSE got the same idea.
So 28 other cars joined me in a crawl into the pits. Of course, 29 cars
is apparently too many for the Nurby pits and by the time I got to my
glowing pit box....somebody else was already there. I bullied my way into
the pitbox and the crew began fueling the car. about 22 seconds later the
tires got pulled off and the crew began working on the damage. Total pit
time was slightly over 1 minute. As I entered the pits, the announcement
came over that the race would go green on the next lap. I was counting on
at least 2 full safety car laps so I could rejoin the field. No such
luck. Still I wasn't last and not too far behind most of the cars since
they all had at least 30 to 40 seconds for fuel and tires. I was just
exiting the Mercedes arena when the race when green. Fighting with a few
cars I began to see some had not done repairs and one by one they peeled
off to re-enter the pits.

Running now about mid pack and dicing with a few cars about my pitiful
level, I did well until an AI car rammed into my rear wing as I slowed for
the easier layout of the Veedol Chicane. (not the sharp F1 Veedol chicane)
Off went my wing and lots of other damage. I just managed to keep the car
running and got back into the pits,,,but with no wing, even pit speed was
dicey. I got back to the box and let the crew assess the damage. I shut
the engine off, just for kicks...didn't need to but why not? Left the
electrics running so I could monitor the other cars. After about two
minutes the repairs were finished. I re=started the engine and double
checked if the pitlane limiter was active. And back into the fray my
battered proton went.

I tried running down some of the other running wounded cars but after 10
or so more laps, my tires really began to blister. The remaining 3 laps
were worthy of some Ruski Ice Skater but I did get the car home...
earned about 250 bucks...enough for maybe one tire. lol.

Except for the bad drivng, you cannot do most of what I described just
now. The proton mod does regular F1 type pitstops. The engine has too
much low end torque and won't stay shut off while stationary. It's ether
shut it all down or have the engine re-fire as soon as you hit the
ignititon switch...ya don't even have to touch the starter button.
Unless.....

Unless you take advantage of some of the new features of the beta
stockcar mod patch. v1087. updating a separate install of rFactor with
the stockcar patch, you can then add the v1.1 of the proton mod and make
some additons to the proton hdv and engine ini to allow the type of racing
described above.

ISI has already bypassed the v1087 so I don't know what the next official
release will be, but hopefully the additions included in 1087 will carry
on to the next official patch. Heck, then that crazy Lienz track complex
is also supposed to have wandering deer at night as well. cool beans.

here is what ya do to get everything going.

Get the 1087 patch included with the latest version of the Stockcar
Evolution mod. unfortunately, I don't know of any stand alone version of
the patch
http://www.rfstockcars.com/index.php

install the patch and then install the v1.1 of the proton mod. You can
also add the v1.0 of the demon cars if you wish. You'll have to duplicate
everything you do to the proton hdv into the deamon hdv. I haven't looked
to see if they share the same engine file.
Once you have verified that the 1087 mod runs you can exit and navigate
to the proton.hdv file. Cut and paste the following lines, taken from a
post on RSC. THANKS to the poster. and put them in the hdv file. I chose
right before the wing sections.

unfortunately the Newsgroup wraps the text horribly. This may not be the
easiest thing to sort out. sorry.

That txt is already setup to have fairly long pitstops and damage repairs.
you can mess with every line to create your perfect set of pit stop
conditions. The one above is kinda a cross between the Grand Am rules and
the Le Mans/ALMS/LMES type rules. The only feature I haven't found is one
that forces the engine to be off before any work is done ah-la GTR.

next the engine. Load up the proton_engine.ini file in a text editor and
change two lines. I made the first two lines to have negative torque so
the engine would not just crank itself to life.

// Engine data generated by PhysicsEditor
RPMTorque=( 0.0, -33.9, -15.90) //( 0.0, -13.9, 0.0)
RPMTorque=( 250.0, -26.6, -10.0)

save and you are done. Go have fun figuring out which buttons you need to
configure to get all your new features. The lcd keys do most of the work.

I have to STRESS that there are no graphic additions to show your
pitwork, you only see a pit timer and the estimated time needed in the
chat box. But hey...it's now possible to pretend you are at le mans
instead of the French GP.
