Default 4WD Flashing on a 97 Explorer XL 4.0 SOHC

I have a 97 Explorer that the 4WD hi/lo is flashing 6 times waits
about 2 minutes and flashes again 6 time. I've noticed in tight turn
there is shutter in the front wheels as though the 4wd is kicked in
but it isn't in the selector. As a matter of fact, the selector now
doesn't work.

I've heard of a speed sensor that might cause this. Is this the spedo
sensor on the transmission or is there another?

If so, is there anywhere on the web showing how to change this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Two sensors actually, both on the transfer case, remove them, wipe
crud off, DRAIN AND REPLACE TRANSFER CASE FLUID or you will be doing
it again soon.

OK....I'm assuming that one is the spedo connector that drive the
speedometer...is that correct. Held on by one bolt?

Where is the other?

Thanks for the reply by the way!

My '99 did the same thing. I pecked on the transfer case motor with a
hammer and fixed it. The motor was stuck. It wouldn't hurt to try this
on yours.

Thanks
Jason
