Default Redline Tranny Oil

I went to the VW shop and asked for some good tranny oil for my 69 Ghia.
They sold me two bottle of 80W Redline synthetic oil. I asked about
it being 80W since VWs use 90W. They said the 80W synthetic is fine.
Are they telling the truth or just selling what they have? I'm not
going to put it in my tranny until I find out for sure it is OK.

Thanks,
Gary

What's the story about GL5 not being good for ACVW trannies? Not true?

Ah, he did not state GL4 or GL5 for the Redline, my fault..

I would stick with GL4.. Penzoil amongst others still have it
available at a good price.

Castrol also makes a full synthetic GL4..

Redline MTL is GL-4. So is MT-90.

When GL5 spec first came out, there was some incompatibility with
yellow metals. They quickly revised the spec (and called it GL5 MT-1)
and it is fine for all yellow metals. All GL5's are now MT-1 also, so
go right ahead and use it. I use mobil1 75w90 in my '69 bug and it has
worked great for quite a while.

Then you are good to go! I'm using Amsoil that is supposedly compatible with GL-3 through 5. A GL-4 compatible oil means
you are golden!
